Sinus Lift (Maxillary Sinus Augmentation)

The process of placing dental implants to restore missing teeth consists of many stages. For many people, one stage of implantation is the prior treatment of the maxillary sinuses, which may have undergone unwanted changes after the loss of teeth.

Here is what is important to know about the sinus-lift procedure, which for some patients is an integral part of restoring an aesthetic and beautiful smile:

What are the maxillary sinuses and why do we need to "lift" them?

The maxillary sinuses are cavities that each of us has in various parts of the face. The maxillary sinuses are lined on the inside with a thin mucous membrane that envelops and protects them. When teeth are missing, the body often absorbs the small bones that supported the teeth in order to use the materials in them for other vital purposes. If the teeth are located near the maxillary sinuses, this can affect the structure, makeup and dimensions of the sinuses themselves.

To reconstruct missing teeth, we at the clinic are committed to doing everything possible so the process goes smoothly and the implants integrate into the mouth in the best possible way. To do this, we need to augment the bone in order to "repair" the maxillary sinus damaged by the missing tooth.

How do you know whether you need this treatment?

In any process of placing dental implants to restore teeth, the doctor first sends the patient for a CT scan, the results of which help build the most complete possible picture of the condition of the mouth, teeth, bones, gum tissue and maxillary sinuses. After a thorough study of the condition of the mouth, as well as a review of the patient's medical history, a tooth-restoration plan is determined, which may also include a preliminary sinus-lift procedure and bone augmentation.

Does a sinus lift increase the possible risks?

This procedure is considered relatively safe, and the risk of severe complications is small. However, in some cases side effects may develop — painful sensations or bleeding at the site of the procedure, a nosebleed, or swelling in the treated area. In such cases you can use over-the-counter painkillers and apply ice to the treated area to reduce swelling.

These effects are well known and should not cause concern. In the vast majority of cases they pass within a few days, leaving no damage, scars or other after-effects.

In exceptional cases a complication called "acute sinusitis" may develop — an infectious inflammation of the maxillary sinuses accompanied by a feeling of pressure under the eyes, fever and general discomfort. In this case a slight bleeding from the nose and mouth, or even a subcutaneous haemorrhage, may appear. However, even in this case it is important to remember that this inflammation is not dangerous and will pass within a few days.
